Someday while in Quarantine, in some place, in a small congested room, a dead mind comes to life with the thought that was buried deep within the unconscious through years of suppression, lies, fears, depressions, hopes, dreams, strengths, weaknesses, gods and the devils….

“Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?”- Joker (2019)

He wakes up from the afternoon nap that left him more tired in the heat of the summer and goes to his small congested room, space where he voluntarily self-isolated himself as if to signify independence, sustainability, freedom, and rebellion to break away from all the craziness. There’s the sound of someone talking, not clear, the horn of few vehicles once in a while, baby-making noises occasionally. “Which is better?”  He thought, “A big mind in a small room or a small mind in a huge bungalow?” not expecting an answer…

Who do you trust nowadays? The ones who were hailed as heroes are now playing the part of villain and the villains whom you would expect to harm you is doing you good. What did I miss? It was all so simple, you do A, you are a hero and out you go to help people, you do B, then you are the bad guy. Turns out, life is just shades of grey. And I DON’T LIKE IT. I DON’T TRUST THEM. I don’t trust anyone anymore. Not the government, not the society, nor the doctors, neither the pseudo-intellectuals. Most of them have been bought, some silenced and others who escaped the mass hypnosis bring out the ugly truths. I’m here, helpless, big mind, in a small room, quarantined, a victim… Just sitting down and taking it like a good little boy.

(There his mind recollects a scene from the movie Joker(2019).

The Murray Show in Joker (2019)

Murray Franklin: Do you have a problem with Thomas Wayne?

Arthur Fleck: Yes, I do. Have you seen what it’s like out there, Murray? Do you ever actually leave the studio? Everybody just yells and screams at each other. Nobody’s civil anymore! Nobody thinks what it’s like to be the other guy. Do you think men like Thomas Wayne ever think what it’s like to be someone like me? To be somebody but themselves? They don’t. They think that we’ll just sit down and take it like good little boys! That we won’t werewolf and go wild!

Self-pity, meaninglessness, pleasure-seeking, a doomer…Society has taken my passion, abused it while me watching, expects me to do the same and calls me crazy when I don’t!!!

Life doesn’t make sense anymore, unnecessary complexity brought about by surging stupidity, enormous egoism, and hearts made of glass broken in the first instance of criticism that they wouldn’t hesitate to humiliate and kill rather than knowing the truth…

Consumed by his deep depression and thoughts, and contemplating his life he sat looking out the window with no one, not even the wind to comfort him…

In his contemplation, his mind remembers the other side of the Joker coin-Bruce Wayne/ Batman. A character who stood against Joker despite having reasons and the resources to avenge the society for being “unfair” to him. Batman was an idea in the movie, a symbol of hope, of meaning and belief in people, opposite of the idea conveyed by Joker.

He opens his journal and writes…

This quarantine reveals to you parts of yourself, your friends, the society, the government, and international organizations. Seems like we have fallen. The more you sympathize with Joker, the more you feel powerless, victimized, treated unfair and helpless. But, I refuse to take that stance, A big mind in a small room or a small mind in a huge bungalow? Maybe neither. Maybe, I will be among the ranks of those who refuse to shut up, sell their souls, be bought and wander meaninglessly to have their pleasures and selfish interests met. Among them, who carries on their with their passion and work despite criticism, those selfless souls, those hidden gems, who serve us all mostly unknown, who seek to spread ideas of liberation and truth like a virus in times where fake news and fear are more viral and infectious than the virus itself. Those people, those human beings, those heroes, those Dark Knights…

He caps his pen, places it in the pen stand in front. Stares at a quote from the movie, The Dark Knight Rises. His depression no more, with a possibility of a new meaning to his life…

“A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boy’s shoulders to let him know that the world hadn’t ended.”

-The Dark Knight Rises
